James will talk about his career, focusing on his outstanding design collaboration with Shona Heath on Poor Things (Yorgos Lanthimos, 2023) for which he received an Academy Award and a BAFTA.
James grew up on a small family farm in North Herefordshire, attending Hereford College of Art and Design, followed by a master’s degree in production design for TV and film. After working on TV dramas, he quickly established himself as a successful art director on projects such as Judy and Paddington 2.
In 2018, he designed his first feature film, The Nest, moving on to espionage series The Ipcress File. He also wrote and directed his own experimental films, with sections shot in rural Herefordshire. James screened his feature Shell Shock at Borderlines in 2010.
More recently, James has spent time in the US on the biographical wrestling film The Iron Claw (2023) and the psychological horror Speak No Evil (2024), set in countryside close to his home in Herefordshire.
