Thrust the most scatological obscenities you can think of into the stuffy quaintness of a 1920s English seaside town, and the outcome is riotous comedy. When the inhabitants of Littlehampton, including hidebound Edith Swan (Colman), begin to receive letters full of hilarious profanities, it is her neighbour, foul-mouthed Irish immigrant Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley) who is charged with the crime. However, as the town's women, led by Police Officer Gladys Moss, begin to investigate, they suspect that something might be amiss. Based on a “stranger than fiction” true scandal that rocked the nation, the terrific ensemble cast squeezes every juicy line of dialogue for what it’s worth.
