Off
Director: Kieran Stringfellow
Starring: Christopher Eccleston
UK, 2023, 1 hour 3 minutes, English

Watch Christopher Eccleston’s powerful and heart wrenching performance of this “haunting portrait of British working-class youth”.

Set in an unspecified mining area in Northern England, the novel follows Billy Casper, a young working-class boy troubled at home and at school, who finds and trains a kestrel whom he names ‘Kes’. This is part of The Read, a series of outstanding performance readings of iconic British novels, produced by Herefordshire’s own Rural Studios.

“If I hadn’t met Barry Hines’ Billy Caspar from [this] extraordinarily beautiful and important novel … I would have cared much less about other people and I would not be an actor” Christopher Eccleston
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Christopher, who will discuss his performance, the original novel by Barry Hines and the importance of working class representation on screen.
