Denis Lavant (Holy Motors, Beau Travail) gives an intensely physical performance in this tender allegory of survival.
Set in a rural Swedish village at the height of the Cold War and based on real events, Redoubt is punctuated with quotes from If War Comes – a civil defence manual issued to Swedish households during the era when fear of nuclear war with Soviet Russia was a daily concern. Through the seasons, eccentric farm worker Karl-Göran Persson fortifies his modest home into a haven against nuclear Armageddon. Compulsively gathering scrap metal, he casts it into the walls, envisioning a fortress that will protect him and his neighbours, but his efforts bewilder everyone except the local children.
